Lower Athabasca

Lower Athabasca Regional Plan

Northeastern Alberta has been the epicentre for economic growth in Alberta and Canada through the development of the oil sands.

In addition to the unique challenges that oil sands development brings, the majority of the land is publicly owned. The region contains both urban and rural areas, many of which are remote and cannot be accessed by road on a year-round basis.

The Lower Athabasca Regional Plan will identify and set resource and environmental management outcomes for air, land, water and biodiversity, and guide future resource decisions while considering social and economic impacts.

Consultation

Consultation with Albertans continued throughout the spring of 2009, with regional plan information and awareness sessions in more than a dozen Lower Athabasca communities, from Bonnyville to Fort Chipewyan.

The government will continue to seek input from Lower Athabasca residents in the fall.
