South Saskatchewan Regional Plan

Southern Alberta has the largest population of any of the seven planning regions, resulting in the need to carefully manage water resources.

The landscape in the South Saskatchewan Region area has changed significantly, largely due to agricultural expansion with the settlement of the province. Much of the region’s native grasslands have been converted to other land covers and much of the forested land cover has been transformed.

Energy development occurs throughout the South Saskatchewan Region, with the exception of the mountain parks.

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan will identify and set resource and environmental management outcomes for air, land, water and biodiversity, and guide future resource decisions while considering social and economic impacts.

Consultation

Consultation with Albertans will run from November 30 to December 10, 2009, with regional plan information and input sessions in sixteen South Saskatchewan Region communities.
